US-based researchers reported that boys who engaged in high-risk sexual activities receive little to no counseling about HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. The study was conducted by Dr. Arik Marcell, a pediatrician at John Hopkin Children’s Center, and other colleagues using data from the 1995 National Survey of Adolescent Males and the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth.
According to the report, 26 percent of male teens who display high-risk sexual behavior-like having sex with a prostitute, a HIV+ person, or while drinking or taking drugs-said they received STD counseling at the doctor’s office. Also, 21 percent of all sexually-active boys in the report discussed STDs and HIV with their doctors.
"If guidelines alone can’t change what is being done at the doctor’s office, then the million-dollar question becomes how to get doctors and nurses to talk with their patients about sexual health," Marcell said in a statement.
