As one of the venereal diseases that anybody can be infected with, Lymphogranuloma venereum or LGV is an STD or sexually transmitted disease that mainly targets and attacks the lymphatics. This particular disease was first observed back in the 1800s when it was becoming more prominent during the day.
The specific symptoms that accompany an infection with LGV are climatic bubo, poradenitis inguinales, Durand-Nicolas-Favre disease, lymphogranuloma inguinale, strumous bubo, tropical bubo and lymphopathia venerea.
The pathophysiology of LGV can be described as being caused by several serovars L1, L2 and L3 of the Chlamydia trachomatis. What happens is it enters the body through different breaks or abrasions in the skin. It may also cross the different epithelial cells of mucous membranes. This particular virus is able to travel through the lymphatics in order to multiply across the whole body.
The common transmission of the disease is through sexual contact. Although there have been other documentation of LGV being transmitted through nonsexual contact, fomites, personal contact as well as various lab accidents. Because of the creation of aerosols of this organism, LGV has also been attributed to infection of pulmonary symptoms.
The first stage of LGV is when there are formations of herpes-looking ulcerations at the site of the infection. The secondary stage can be described as the “inguinal syndrome” in men where there is painful inguinal lymphadenitis. There is also tender inguinal lymphadenopathy which is the swelling of the lymph nodes.
There are also several connected symptoms that may accompany this swelling of the lymph nodes. There will be trouble for lymphatic drainage from the penis and because of this, heterosexual men are affected most often in the inguinal lymph nodes. In the earlier stages of the disease, you will be able to see several nodes which will be characterized by fleshy and diffuse reticulosis.
At the tertiary stage of the disease which occurs after the initial infection, there is an anogenitorectal syndrome which results with rectal stricture or elephantiasis of the genitalia. This particular syndrome is most commonly found predominantly in homosexual men and women because of where the lymphatics are situated.
Normally, if LGV is treated immediately with medication and therapy, people will normally bounce back and see a complete resolution of the different symptoms that they are experiencing. Death will only occur if there is bowel obstruction from the rectal stricture will result in perforation. Otherwise, the disease is readily curable.
Since you already know what types of symptoms you will be facing when you are infected with this particular sexually transmitted disease, it would be best that you exert extreme caution with regard to your sexual health. The aforementioned syndromes are sure to make anyone uncomfortable.
It will be best if one avoids having a sexually transmitted disease first of all, to avoid these uncomfortable symptoms. Secondly, if you manage to transfer the disease to a person then you would have done even more harm than when you started. LGV is a serious condition and ultimately, it’s about thinking about the welfare of the other person more than yours.
