While, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has benefited women and girls for many years, but recent research shows that it can also help boys and men. In the February 3 issue of New England Journal of Medicine, vaccination with HPV vaccine protects against infection with four types of HPV infection and even the development of related external genital warts or lesions. However, men who have sex with men are at an increased risk for genital warts and anal cancer and likely would not benefit from the vaccination.
HPV is a sexually transmitted infection that can be transmitted through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It has also been linked to genital warts, as well as a variety of cancers in the external genital area.
The debate, however, is whether or not HPV vaccination should be encouraged as much as the vaccine is recommended on women and girls.
