Liberal Democrats have cited a large rise in cases of sexually-transmitted infections among middle-aged people and the elderly in the United Kingdom. According to their report, patients with chlamydia and syphilis have risen sharply since 2002.
Cases of chlamydia among those aged 45 to 64 went up from 1,276 in 2002 to 1,933-or a 51% rise-in 2006. Meanwhile, chlamydia patients among those aged 65 above went from 59 to 81 (37% rise) during that same period.
Meanwhile, cases of gonorrhea among persons aged 65 above went from 53 in 2002 to 59 in 2006. In contrast, those infected with gonorrhea who are between 45 to 64 decreased from 1,145 to 1,102.
Syphilis cases among people aged 45 to 64 rose 139%, from 172 in 2002 to 411 in 2006. At that same period, the over-65s who are infected with syphilis rose from 12 to 37 (an increase of 208%).
Liberal Democrat health spokeswoman Sandra Gidley said that campaigns against STIs should also be made available for middle-aged people, and not just for the young.
