Most older Americans have a lot of problems to deal with especially when it comes to their health, but acquiring sexually transmitted disease is far from it. However, some of the over-45 crowd are prone to getting venereal diseases.
In a study published in the British Medical Journal, older swingers (who practice mate swapping and group sex) are at high risk for common sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea. The infection rate is as high as any other high-risk groups, like younger people and men who have sex with men. Although it is quite obvious their lifestyle puts them at risk, they are less informed than the younger generation, which is why they are less likely to practice safe sex or get regular screenings to detect infections.
The research was based on data collection from nearly 9,000 patients at STI clinics in the Netherlands over a two-year period. All the patients visiting the clinic were asked if they were swingers.
According to the report, swingers had the second highest combined rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea with 10.4 percent of swingers being infected. The result is compared to 14 percent among gay men, 10 percent among straight people who do not swing, and 5 percent among female prostitutes. However, when looked at the over-45 population, researchers found that 55 percent of the diagnoses for chlamydia and gonorrhea occurred in swingers, compared to 31 percent in gay men.
The study authors recommend that swingers be tested for common infections regularly, as well as practice safe sex, including regular condom use.
