Hundreds of unreported HIV cases were discovered in Saudi Arabia in 2006 after thousands of people volunteered to donate blood, according to a report from Al-Eqtisadiah newspaper. During that year, 368 HIV cases were discovered at 253 clinics across the kingdom.
Other diseases discovered among aspiring blood donors include 32,798 cases of hepatitis B; 2,862 cases of hepatitis C; 1,145 cases of syphilis; 13 cases of malaria; and 777 cases of high blood pressure.
According to Ibrahim Al-Omar, a representative of the kingdom’s Ministry of Health, over 310,000 people were allowed to donate blood that year.
