How To Deal With Pubic Lice

Normally, if you are diagnosed to have a sexually transmitted disease, you will probably go into a fit of panic and maybe start thinking about your remaining days as well as your last will and testament. However, not all sexually transmitted diseases are like the well-known killer, AIDS. One example of such is crab louses.

They are also known as “crabs” because of their resemblance to the sea-dwelling creatures. They are actually small, hard-to-detect insects. Their common name is Phthirus pubis because they are known to attach themselves on human hairs.

They have garnered such a name simply because their usual dwelling place on a human is among their pubic hair but they have been spotted in axillary or armpit hair, facial hair such as mustaches, goatees and beards and even eyelashes. Pubic lice is not exclusive to a specific race or climate and can be transmitted to anybody.

Causes of Pubic Lice

Pubic lice are transferred by intimate contact. When adult lice are already on the person, these adult lice lay their eggs called “nits” on the hair shaft which is close to the skin. When the egg which is whitish in color hatches after 7-10 days, they evolve into nymphs. These nymphs then feed on the blood of their hosts.

Symptoms

When you have pubic lice, you probably will not notice any symptoms except for some itching which will only worsen at night. Since pubic lice are difficult to see because of their color which blends well into the skin of their hosts, they also have a distinct advantage since they are quite small for the human eye to immediate recognize.

The gray type of lice blend right in with the white skin of other people and the different brown lice are able to pass of as moles. If you do get bitten or if you have an infestation, then you will probably experience some rashes on the bites. They will be characterized by light and bluish spots. If pubic lice infest your eyebrows, you will eventually notice an inflammation of the surrounding areas of your eyes.

Treatment

Pubic lice and their eggs are resistant to ordinary soap and water. One should remember that it would be best that you go straight to your health care provider for a diagnosis on how to solve this particular problem. You can normally use a Permethrin 1% cream rinse which is mostly available off-the-counter. Wash your infected areas, let it stay for around 10 minutes, rinse and then have all of your sheets and immediate clothes washed. You can either bag them or have them laundry cleaned. It would benefit you as well as the other people if you have come into intimate contact with are warned as to protect them.

It should be remembered that even though you are already cured, it means that your bedsheets or pillows do not have crab lice in them. It will save you a lot of trouble and itching if you had your sheets and pillowcases cleaned by a professional laundrymat. Doing this will prevent further future infestation and will not give you any more lice.
